German Classification of Occupations 2010 (KldB 2010)

German Classification of Occupations 2010 (KldB 2010)

The German Classification of Occupations 2010 (KldB 2010) summarises occupations based on two dimensions. Firstly, on the basis of occupational specialisation (bundle of professional competences, related to occupational content) and secondly, based on the level of requirements (cf. Paulus et al. 2010: 7). The KldB 2010 is divided into five levels: The first level comprises 10 occupational areas, the second level 37 occupational main groups, the third level 144 occupational groups and, since an amendment in 2020, the fourth level contains 702 occupationals sub-groups and the fifth level 1,300 occupational types (cf. Bundesagentur für Arbeit, Klassifikation der Berufe 2010 – überarbeitete Fassung 2020).

Origin/Creator: Federal Employment Agency (BA), Federal Statistical Office (StaBu), Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB)
Method/Structure: The KldB 2010 was developed through theory-driven, empirical and practical analysis on the similarity of occupations (cf. Paulus et al. 2010: 5). The classification consists of five levels, the first four being an occupational classification of occupations. They were grouped based on their similarity, i.e. the tasks, knowledge and skills that characterise them. On the fifth level, the following requirement levels are differentiated:
1 ⇒ unskilled, low-complexity routine tasks;
2 ⇒ skilled, more technical tasks requiring at least two or three years of vocational training;
3 ⇒ complex tasks involving special knowledge, which require at least master craftsman or technician training;
4 ⇒ highly complex tasks requiring at least a higher education degree (cf. Paulus et al. 2010: 7ff.)
About 90 per cent of the 5-digits (i.e. fifth level) can be clearly assigned to a 4-digit of ISCO-08 (cf. Paulus et al. 2010: 31).
Development/implementation for Germany: The KldB 2010 is a further development of the previous classifications of occupations; it is intended to standardise and update the 1988 and 1992 versions (cf. Paulus et al. 2010: 4).

The KldB 2010 was slightly modified in 2020 by adding the remark "revised version". The revised version comprises two new occupational sub-groups (4-digit) and 14 new occupational types (5-digit). In the process, there have also been a small number of new classifications of singular occupations.
