German Classification of Occupations 1988 (KldB 88)

The German Classification of Occupations 1988 of the Federal Employment Agency (BA) summarises occupations based on similar tasks, but irrespective of qualification and level of work difficulty. The KldB 1988 is divided into 5 levels and comprises 6 occupational areas, 33 occupational sections, 86 occupational groups, 334 occupational orders and 1,991 occupational classes (cf. KldB 88).

Origin/Creator: German Federal Employment Agency (BA)
Method/Structure: The occupational areas, as the highest level, are differentiated according to primary production, manufacturing and services (6). The occupational sections contain occupations that are similar in nature, e.g. with regard to the occupational tasks and the materials (33). The occupational groups include occupations that are related in nature (86). The occupational orders, in turn, cover occupations that are similar in nature (334). The occupational classes comprise the individual occupations (1,991) (cf. KldB 88).
Development/implementation for Germany: The KldB 88 is the update of the 1980 version of the Classification of Occupations of the Federal Employment Agency, which in turn is the update of the KldB 1975. The KldB 1988 and 1975 are almost identical at the 3-digit level.
