Knowledge-intensive occupations (WiB I)

Another way of classifying occupations according to knowledge intensity refers to the requirement that a workplace places on its workers. An occupation is knowledge-intensive when it comprises an above-average proportion of highly skilled jobs. According to this definition, knowledge-intensive occupations include 15 occupational groups and an additional 5 occupational fields (cf. Hall 2007).

Origin/Creator: Anja Hall, Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB)
Method/Structure: An occupation is considered as knowledge-intensive if the share of highly skilled jobs in the occupational group is above the average (38.8% for the BIBB/BAuA Employment Survey 2006). Highly skilled jobs, in turn, are those that require an academic or advanced training qualification (master craftsman, technician).
