Knowledge-intensive occupations (WiB II)

A second possibility to define knowledge-intensive occupations is the differentiation based on the indicator knowledge requirement.
The knowledge requirement is high if a person has to fulfil flexible tasks, frequently acquire or generate knowledge and comply with high learning and creativity requirements. In this way, a total of 88 occupational orders of the KldB 92 stated as knowledge-intensive occupations (cf. Tiemann 2009).

Origin/Creator: Michael Tiemann, Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB)
Method/Structure: The data basis for the differentiation of knowledge-intensive occupations by using the knowledge requirement indicator is the BIBB/BAuA Employment Survey from 2006. First, high and low knowledge requirements are distinguished. This distinction bases on the the frequency of characteristics learning requirements and creativity requirements. Persons hold an occupation with high knowledge requirements if they frequently face creativity and learning requirements, if they sometimes have to cope with creativity requirements and frequently with learning requirements or if they frequently need to meet creativity requirements and sometimes learning requirements. If there are more employees with high knowledge requirements in an occupational group than this applies to three quarters of all employees, it is a knowledge-intensive occupational order.
