Knowledge-intensive occupations (WiB III)

The consideration of the knowledge requirements in different sectors is another way to identify knowledge-intensive occupations.
Within the production-related occupations, 41 occupational orders were classified as knowledge-intensive, within the primary service occupations 19 and within the secondary service occupations 30 (cf. Tiemann 2009).

Origin/Creator: Michael Tiemann, Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB)
Method/Structure: This classification is also using data from the BIBB/BAuA Employment Survey 2006. First, the occupations are divided into three sectors based on their occupational task focus: Production occupations, primary service occupations and secondary service occupations. Within these sectors, the knowledge-intensive occupations are defined by the level of knowledge requirements (the threshold is the top quartile of the respective group) (cf. Tiemann 2009).
