Statistical Classification of Economic Activities (NACE Rev. 1.1)

Statistical Classification of Economic Activities (NACE Rev. 1.1)

The Nomenclature statistique des activités économiques dans la Communauté européenne (NACE) Rev. 1.1 from 2002 groups its categories based on similar production activities (Eurostat 2002).
The NACE Rev. 1.1 is organised into four levels: 17 sections, 62 divisions, 224 groups and 515 classes (Statistisches Bundesamt 2003: 13).

Origin/Creator: Eurostat
Method/Structure: The NACE Rev. 1.1 is derived from the ISIC Rev. 3.1. sections and divisions of both classifications are identical. The groups and classes of the NACE Rev. 1.1 are an adaptation of the ISIC Rev. 3.1 to European requirements. They can always be aggregated into the groups and classes of the ISIC Rev. 3.1 (Eurostat 2002).
The top of the classification level is also identical with the WZ 2003, while the other levels of the NACE Rev.1.1 are almost identical with the WZ 2003. Only the divisions for recording the production activities of private households for personal use were not integrated into the WZ 2003 (Statistisches Bundesamt 2003: 12f.).
Development/implementation for Germany: The NACE Rev. 1.1 is the result of an update of the NACE Rev. 1. The aim of the update was: 1. to integrate new activities into the classification, 2. to update activities that have turned out to be important and 3. to make corrections to the NACE Rev. 1. All adaptations are rather minor changes (Eurostat 2002).
